INFORMATION FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS IN JAVEA "THE PEARL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN"
Jávea or Xàbia, its name in Valencian, is located in the Valencian Community and in the province of Alicante. Located on the Costa Blanca, it is 92 km from Alicante and 105 km from Valencia. Located between two capes (La Nao and San Antonio) it is bathed by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and protected from continental winds by the Montgó mountain barrier. It has a contrasting landscape: coast, mountain and interior of orchards and vineyards.
Jávea has 28,731 inhabitants (2022) of which 43.96% are of foreign nationality, in particular, from Great Britain and Germany. The population doubles and in summer it even multiplies up to approximately 150,000, due to the large number of tourists, the main economic sector of the town.
Did you know?
- 85 different nationalities live in Jávea?
- Cabo La Nao is the easternmost point of this part of Spain?
- The tennis player David Ferrer is from Jávea?
- the two capes protect Jávea and provide it with a unique microclimate?
- The climate in this area has been declared one of the healthiest in the world by the WHO, the World Health Organization?
- Jávea is known for being very green despite the fact that there is little rain? This is because Jávea has a large amount of groundwater. In addition, there is an underground river called "Moraig", which comes from the mountains of Pedreguer and whose source can be found in "La Cueva de la Calavera" in Benidoleig.
- Perhaps the name of Xábia comes from all this underground water, that is, from the Arabic word "Xábiga", which means something like "well to the cistern" due to the many rainwater wells that were here.
Jávea is made up of three urban centers: the old town, the port and the Arenal.
In the Old Town, we can still find the typical narrow streets and beautiful old facades. In the old town we can also find the town hall, the church, the post office, several shops and also a market that takes place every Thursday.
The Port area is the most modern area and we can also find shops and restaurants. In addition, you can go for a pleasant walk along the seashore and visit the port and the fish market.
El Arenal or Playa del Arenal, is the most touristic area of Jávea, we will find the sandy beach and a wonderful promenade with shops, restaurants and bars with a great atmosphere. During the day you can go to the beach and take a bath in the sea. Later, you can come to eat something in one of the restaurants or have a drink or a cocktail watching the sunset on one of the terraces with spectacular views of the sea.
Montgó Natural Park
Jávea is known for the 753 meter "Montgó" mountain that can be seen from many places in the town. From afar the mountain resembles an elephant with a long trunk that flows into the sea. It is surrounded by a beautiful natural park where you can walk or ride a bike. The most daring and experienced hikers can even climb to the top, from where they can see beautiful views of the surroundings.
The beaches and coves of Jávea
Jávea has a beautiful rocky coastline with many small coves and bays. The beaches are stone or rock and crystal clear waters. Los Molinos - The windmills
"Los Molinos" (Els Molins in Valencian) is one of these viewpoints, located in La Plana and whose name comes from the 11 windmills that have been here since the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Originally they were used to grind grain, the main local product at the time. The mills can be seen from the town and the port.
Churches
In the old town in the Plaza de la Iglesia is the "Iglesia de San Bartolomé" dating from the 16th century, and next to it the original town hall. In the port there is a church called "Nuestra Señora de Loreto" or "Parroquia del Mar", a modern church, although it comes from a church built in the port area at the same time as the town church. This church has a peculiar shape of a ship's keel.
In addition, in Jávea you can find an archaeological and ethnographic museum Soler Blasco and La Casa del Cable. The latter was built in 1860 to house a telegraph station that linked the continent with the island of Ibiza through submarine cables. Today, the rooms are used for exhibitions.
